T-Mobile Wideband Upgrades Live in New York City -

T-Mobile today announced that the company's faster "wideband" LTE upgrades have gone live in New York City, the upgrades providing speed bumps of 50% and theoretical peak speeds of up to 100 Mbps downstream. According to a T-Mobile announcement, the wideband upgrades are now available in Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island and Northern NJ. The company says all of Westchester County, NY and Central New Jersey will be "added soon."

T-Mobile says that New York City customers have been using an average of 2.6 GB of data per month with average download speeds of 22.2 Mbps − "faster than AT&T and Verizon and more than two times faster than Sprint s network speeds," claims the carrier.

T-Mobile's wideband upgrades are now available in 27 major markets.

We are working relentlessly to bring more Wideband LTE to more markets in 2015 for our customers to enjoy," proclaims the company. T-Mobile also announced that the carrier will have a new "uncarrier" update they plan to unveil sometime tomorrow.

Sneaky Sneaky Review (PC)

If you like the idea of a casual Assassin's Creed with cutesy chibi artwork, Sneaky Sneaky might just be the game you didn't know you were looking for. Many games making the jump from mobile to PC are met with skepticism, and rightly so, as oftentimes they scream at you that you should touch them all over their overgrown buttons so loudly that you can't help but close then send them packing. Some games, however, manage to make a more graceful transition, and even though they clearly show the...

Microsoft, Google, Adobe Leave Russia Due to Putin's New Laws

Tech companies Microsoft, Google, and Adobe are all giving up on their Russian operations amid a new law requested by President Vladimir Putin and which requires companies to store collected user data on local servers which would obviously become accessible to authorities. The retreat was started by Microsoft last month, when the company decided to move its Skype development team from Moscow to Prague. Adobe, on the other hand, ceased its Russian operations entirely, explaining that it doesn'...

This War of Mine Diary – Food and Booze

Much of the tension in This War of Mine is linked to the fact that it often looks like there won’t be enough food the next day to feed the three survivors gamers start off with, and gaining access to more nutrition could get the character doing the scavenging hurt or even killed. For the first few days, I often had to pick which members of the group would spend the day without food and not doing any work in order to conserve the meager resources I had access to, and only a rather fortuitous v...

Don't Trust the Pirate Bay Posers

Don't Trust the Pirate Bay Posers

The Pirate Bay went dark last week following a raid by Swedish police. In its wake a number of sites aping the original have popped up, attempting to fill the void. Don't trust them.

It's no surprise that bad actors have swooped in to fill the highly publicized hole left behind by the legendary site. By the end of the week, the folks at another famous torrent tracker, Isohunt launched a buggy clone at the oldpiratebay.org, which supposedly contained a complete copy of The Pirate Bay's original archive. Though, as the most respected observer of piracy-related issues noted at the time, "OldPirateBay.org doesn't have much to do with TPB though. It appears to be little more than a copy of Isohunt.to with a Pirate Bay Theme, which is missing many original Pirate Bay torrents."

Others have followed. Over the weekend, an old (unofficial) Pirate Bay mirror called thepiratebay.cr sent around an email claiming to be a newly rebuilt Pirate Bay with upload capabilities and other original functionality. From the outside, it appears to look just like The Pirate Bay but as VentureBeat, TorrentFreak, and others have noted, the .cr domain has never been officially affiliated by the original tracker. Indeed, by TF's account, TBP still controls its .se domain, so there's simply no reason for the original Pirate Bay to set up shop anywhere else when and if it decides to come back to life.

In short, what we've got are a bunch of opportunists hoping to exploit their old loose affiliation with TBP for their own ends. Which is fine and great if we trust them, but should you? There are already reports that the self-anointed replacement thepiratebay.cr replacement is riddled with malware.

While it's existentially sad that The Pirate Bay might be gone, you should be circumspect of any site that purports to be TPB, no matter how much it looks like the original. It's easy for criminals and law enforcement agencies alike to exploit your trust in that old, familiar brand to harvest your information and get you into trouble.

It's probably best to stay way from clones and to seek out the many established and well-regarded torrent trackers out there. (They're very easy to find.) Torrents aren't dead, but until we get an all clear, it's safer to assume that the Pirate Bay is gone forever.

Uber criticized over cost surge in Sydney during hostage siege

Uber criticized over cost surge in Sydney during hostage siege

Uber is offering free rides in Sydney as it seeks to make good after the cost of some car rides in Sydney spiked during the hostage siege at a cafe.

As you are likely aware, there is a terrible hostage situation currently underway in Sydney and it is dominating more or less all major media outlets at the moment.

It turns out that after this crisis started, the cost of using Uber drivers to get away from the central business district (CBD) in the city spiked, prompting criticism of the firm which promises typically to cost less than traditional taxi services.

The company found itself accused of exploiting the situation in Sydney for profit. For example, some drivers were quoted prices often more than twice the usual rate to get from the CBD to the airport.

It would appear that the increase in cost was simply down to the increase in demand in the area of the city. The algorithm used to set pricing for the service responded to the gulf between demand and available cars by pushing up the cost. The intention of this cost increase is to draw more Uber drivers into the area.

Uber has responded by refunding customers who were overcharged and by offering free rides out of the CBD to help people to get home safely.

"We are in the process of refunding rides. If you have been charged during these hours leaving the CBD please email supportsydney@uber.com," an Uber blog post reads.

"Our thoughts are with those affected and the NSW Police Force."

Reminding white allies that it's not about them right now

Photo: Reuters

Jetta Rae Robertson brings us the concerning view from the front line of recent Berkeley protests on recent police violence against black people: The black organizers of the protests have been rapidly racked with a two-front conflict; they crawl along reclaimed city streets to avoid being kettled in by a militarized police force as the ever-prying hands of jilted and restless white “activists” try to wrest control of the space and spirit of this movement so they can smash bike shops and kick police barricades (as some were reportedly doing at last night's protest).
