EFF: Apple's Dev Agreement Means No EFF Mobile App For iOS

schwit1 writes The EFF launched a new app that will make it easier for people to take action on digital rights issues using their phone. The app allows folks to connect to their action center quickly and easily, using a variety of mobile devices. Sadly, though, they had to leave out Apple devices and the folks who use them. Why? Because they could not agree to the terms in Apple's Developer Agreement and Apple's DRM requirements.

Comcast: Customer Service Soon To Be 'One Of Our Best Products' -

About twice a year now for a decade or more, usually after a flurry of bad press, a Comcast executive will come forward and proclaim the company has truly seen the light when it comes to its awful customer service. The hat-in-hand promises usually involve the company stating it's going to change everything and make customer service a top priority. That's usually followed by customer satisfaction study after study (on top of endless anecdotal consumer stories) showing that absolutely nothing has changed.

2014 was certainly no exception, with an endless list of bad press for Comcast screw ups, followed by the expected vociferous public apology, followed by nothing actually changing. In fact, the latest study by the ACSI shows that despite these promises, Comcast customer service is actually getting worse. It was in fact a little more amplified this year as Comcast looks for regulatory approval to buy Time Warner Cable.

With regulatory deal approval squarely in mind, Comcast TV CEO Neil Smit told attendees of CES this week that Comcast was so hard at work, customer service would soon be one of their "best products":

quote:

Smit told the audience at a Fast Innovation panel Wednesday afternoon that Comcast is on the way to a complete customer service turnaround. "We do need to transform our customer experience, and I think we have a lot of work to do, Smit said, in what might be the understatement of the century. "It will take time, but we ll get it done."... We expect that customer service will soon be one of our best products, Smit concluded optimistically, while we all rolled our eyes.

The problem with that promise is that the reason Comcast customer service is so bad is because they don't face intense-enough broadband competition, competition that's only likely to lessen as there's more industry consolidation (like AT&T grabbing DirecTV) and fewer options (AT&T, Verizon exiting the DSL market). Comcast isn't skimping on customer service just because they think it's fun, they do it because there's nothing pressuring them to spend the necessary money to really fix things like low-quality subcontractors, or entire corporate arms of the company that can't be bothered to speak to one another.

Until Comcast faces more meaningful competition, nothing's going to change -- as a decade of promises to get better at customer service makes abundantly clear.

Report: Microsoft's New Browser Will Have Cortana and Stylus Annotation

Report: Microsoft's New Browser Will Have Cortana and Stylus Annotation

If you use Internet Explorer you are a damn fool, but according The Verge's Microsoft scoop factory Tom Warren, the forthcoming Windows 10 replacement for Microsoft's beleaguered browser will be loaded with features that no other software currently offers.

The new browser, which we already heard was codenamed "Spartan" will reportedly have a couple of cool capabilities. that seem to dovetail nicely with Microsoft's initiatives in other areas. According to Warren, the new browser will have the Cortana voice-assistant built right in so you can speak commands and searches at your browser. Not surprising since we already knew there would be Cortana integration in Windows. Furthermore there will be a new support for annotation. So if you're reading a webpage on your Surface tablet, you can use the stylus to mark up a page and then email yourself a copy. No surprise again: This feature will supposedly be powered by Microsoft's OneDrive cloud storage service.

These sound like useful features that might actually make a browser attractive to a normal internet user. We'll likely hear a full rundown for the future of Internet Explorer at Microsoft's Windows 10 event at the end of this month. Until, then, we can file everything under rumor. But let's hope Microsoft gets this browser business together because its existing product is an embarrassment. [The Verge]

Kepler-438b and 442b: Are These the Planets We're Looking For?

Astronomers have discovered eight new potentially habitable planets beyond our solar system, including two that are the most similar to Earth of any discovered so far. First identified by NASA's Kepler mission, all eight of the planets are located in their distant suns' "habitable zone," or the region where liquid water might exist on the surface of an orbiting planet.
